ICYMI: Arizona Leads Nation in SNAP Benefit Losses — More Than 400K Residents Cut Off, Nearly Half of Participants

PHOENIX —  Arizona is leading the nation in the loss of food assistance, with more than 400,000 residents, including 180,000 children, cut off from SNAP benefits since July — the largest decline of any state by a wide margin.

The drop represents nearly half of all SNAP participants in Arizona, signaling a rapid and unprecedented loss of food assistance that policy experts warn could spread nationwide as federal changes take hold.

Arizona’s decline far exceeds other states. The next-largest drop — in Florida — is less than half as large, underscoring how dramatically Arizona stands apart as a national outlier.

“This is not a normal fluctuation — this is a massive loss of food assistance happening in real time,” said Joseph Palomino, director of the Arizona Center for Economic Progress. “Arizona is the alarm bell for the rest of the country.”

The sharp decline follows the implementation of federal policy changes that:

  • Expand work requirements
  • Shift more program costs to states
  • Penalize states for administrative error rates

Experts and on-the-ground accounts indicate that beyond policy changes, administrative strain — including staffing cuts and outdated systems — is making it harder for eligible families to access benefits.

Why This Matters

SNAP is one of the most effective anti-hunger and economic support programs in the country. As participation drops:

  • Families are losing access to basic food assistance
  • Children — including an estimated 180,000 in Arizona — are directly affected
  • Local economies lose federal dollars that would otherwise be spent at grocery stores and small businesses

Arizona’s experience is increasingly being viewed as a preview of broader national impacts as similar policies are implemented across states.
